Dancing With And Through Grief

The following is a Passion Post I wrote for One Nia Girl. It was published on Thursday, August 23, 2012.

Today is the 10 year anniversary of my father's death. He died unexpectedly at the age of 55. A year after his passing, I discovered Nia. More than any practice, Nia has helped me to heal and move through intense grief over the past ten years. As I look back now and think about the different approaches I sought - which included grief counseling, yoga, painting, massage, and sisterhood, none have held a candle to the healing power of Nia.

What exactly has Nia done for me and through me the past ten years?
- In grief counseling it seems I could never find the words to express the depth of loss and sorrow I felt. When I practice Nia, it feels like I have an endless vocabulary and ways to express the range of emotions that come, including hope and joy. With Nia, I learned quickly that my body has the capacity to express what words can’t and it stretches me to feel in new ways constantly.

- As a practice, Nia helps me to move stuck energy in my body so that I don’t feel crippled by the waves of grief that come and go with various intensity.

- Grief made me feel fragmented and Nia reminded me of my wholeness by addressing the needs and desires of my body, mind, heart, and spirit.

- Through the White Belt, Blue Belt, and Nia 5 Stages intensives and the continuing education/sensation scientist modules, I am continuously cultivating greater awareness of sensation and appreciation for my body’s signals. It has taught me how to move to self-heal when symptoms of grief arise. When I feel a lump in my throat I make sounds...and loudly! When I feel my chest tighten I can explore any of the Nia movements related to the chest or upper extremities. When I feel groundless I focus on my feet and the base of my body.

- Learning that pain is signal that something is wrong and needs attention was like getting hit in the head with a boulder. I have never forgotten this lesson and I listen intently to my body and if there is pain, I address it immediately. I honor her voice.

- I’ve learned to take my time and to trust the process of healing by honoring natural time. I can’t be rushed but I am always willing to venture out and explore my edge. I find it both liberating and exhilarating that Nia encourages me to discover to move my own unique way, to find my internal and external rhythm and to embrace that this expression is ever changing. This is such an important lesson for moving through grief (for me).

- By continually tracking sensation and tweaking for pleasure, I have learned to be fully present both on and off the dance floor. Nia has taught me to give undivided attention to the health of my body, mind, heart and spirit. That has meant honoring the grieving process and noticing the signs of healing as they unfold. No pushing through or forcing. I have learned to love the path of least resistance.

- FreeDance, although it terrified me at first, has taught me how to let go, play and explore. Related to grief, it’s been an invitation to act out a variety of emotions through movement, including the dance of grief.

- More than anything Nia has taught me that Joy can reside beside grief with a loving hand and that I can choose to experience the sensations of joy and pleasure in my own body even when grief is at the surface. This awareness and this choice have brought a depth of joy into all areas of my life. A friend once told me that I was unapologetically joyful, and even though I blushed when she said it I knew she was right and I have Nia to thank for it.

As I celebrate my father today, August 23rd, I know I have my Nia practice to support whatever comes up for me on that day or the surrounding days. A decade has passed and grief still comes in waves. I will dance lovingly and joyfully with whatever comes, honoring its presence and then willingly release it when it leaves. My allies are here to light the way: the movement forms, the 13 principles, the Nia 5 Stages, the five sensations, the philosophy rooted in pleasure, and the simple act of choosing Joy. I unapologetically choose Joy. I can see my father smiling already.

Ease, Self-Care and a New Class

I got back from my vacation visiting with my family and close friends in New York on Monday. After not teaching for 8 days and being in vacation-mode, the focus for nearly all of my classes this week has been on ease. I desired to ease into the week and take the path of least resistance finding the juicy goodness in being kind to my body by inviting every movement to initiate from this place of "easy." As the week closes out I find myself desiring to focus on the sensations of joy, stability and balance. We'll play with that foci this weekend!

I promise to share more about my NY visit - including teaching my first Nia class to my family and friends - in my next newsletter.

Two big things are happening this weekend and I hope you will join me for one or both!

Tomorrow - Self-Care Second Friday Nia-Yoga

Where: The Dance Space in Greenwood, 124 N 103rd Street Seattle, WA 98133

End your workweek with this invigorating and relaxing class co-taught by me and certified yoga instructor, Liziah Woodruff. This class will leave you with a healthy body, quiet mind, open heart and vibrant spirit. The perfect way to end your workweek and welcome your weekend!

The annual Greenwood Street Fair is happening this Friday from 6pm-10pm so Greenwood Ave will be closed. Please be sure to take another route to The Dance Space!

NEW CLASS -
Starting on Sunday, August 12, 2012 I will be teaching my Sunday morning Nia class at 10:30am (same time!) at Balance Studio (formerly Planet Earth Yoga). The studio is quite special. It’s about a block away from the Fremont Rocket and almost directly across the street from the Theo Chocolate Factory (be still my heart). It looks like a house. You enter the “house” and walk up the steps, walk down the short hallway and enter the studio through French doors. The studio is 1200 sq feet of sweetness. We will have tons of space to spread out and go wild! There is also plenty of natural light including a skylight and the floors are super soft and clean.  The sound system is sweet and the environment has a Zen-like quality to it. It was, for me, love at first sight. Sunday mornings will be divine here.

Here are the details:

Sunday morning Nia - starting this Sunday, August 12, 2012
Time: 10:30am – 11:30am
Where: Balance Studio (formerly Planet Earth Yoga), 418 N. 35th St, Seattle, WA 98103

Note: Street parking is free and there is plenty of it but give yourself time to find a spot since the Farmer’s Market is down the street. The studio is located on N 35th St between Phinney Ave N and Evanston Ave N and is nearly across the street from the Theo Chocolate Factory. Look for the yellow house with the turquoise trim and orange steps. Step inside, walk up the stairs, down the hall and look for me in the waiting area. The yoga class ends at 10:15am so we will have to quietly wait outside the room until the yogi’s emerge and then we dance!

Delilah’s Belly Dance Studio will be closing as of August 1, 2012 and so the last Sunday Nia class at the studio will be on Sunday, July 29, 2012. I am truly sad to see this beautiful space close. July 2012 Newsletter

It finally feels like summer has arrived. I’ve been savoring every moment of the sunshine and taking the time to stop and admire how the sun makes everything in this beautiful city look even more radiant. My husband and I went for a walk the other night around sunset and were in awe with what we witnessed as one of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve ever seen. We turned to it each other, pinched one another in the arm and exclaimed, “We live here!” How cool is that?! All the while my family members were roasting on the east coast. We’re headed to visit them at the end of this month and are hoping it cools off by then.

Celebrating my Nia Teaching Anniversary

Classes are going well and I am enjoying seeing new faces and returning students that have been away for a while. On August 1st I celebrate entering my third year of teaching. Time has flown by and while I think I’ve finally found my groove as a teacher I hope I always retain my beginner’s mind and body. I am revisiting old routines and discovering them anew and sharing them with great excitement because I can finally count and remember the steps without holding my breath and concentrating too hard! Did you know that I used to hold my breath because I was afraid I’d forget the choreography and cues? Did you know that I forgot my own name the first time I ever taught a class? I giggle when I think about it.

Sharing Nia with my Family and Friends

On July 28, 2012 I get to share Nia with my family and friends in NY. I am so excited to share what I love with them and I need to remind myself to keep the class to an hour because I put together an initial playlist with like twenty songs. I don’t want to scare them away! The person I want to be there the most is my mother and my fingers and toes are crossed that she feels well enough to come. I will give you a full report when I return.

Events, Special Classes and Sunday Change

Now onto news! Below is what’s coming up in special classes, events and changes to my Sunday morning class:

JAG's Rock Nia Class!

I am thrilled to announce that, while I am in Portland this weekend celebrating my dear friend's graduation from naturopathic medical school, Jason Alan Griffin will be teaching my class at Community Fitness Roosevelt Studio (6108 Roosevelt Way NESeattle, WA 98115) on Saturday, June 30, 2012 from 1pm - 2pm. Drop-in rate is $12.

I am envious that you all get to dance with Jason while I am away. Not only is he a masterful instructor, he's also delivering his Rock Nia routine!

Jason says, about his Rock Nia routine, "We will rock out to Pink Floyd, The Doors, Steppenwolf, Deep Purple and more rock favorites from the 60s and 70s in this Classic Rock Nia Routine called ROCKIN' that focuses on the Low Middle and High planes with the intention of Gettin' Down, Chillin' Out and Gettin' High."

Now do you understand why I am envious that you get to play with Jason while I am away?

About Jason Alan Griffin (JAG)
An ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor since 1994, Jason has been studying Yoga since 1995 and teaching Nia since 1996. His knowledge of the body and how it functions, how it responds to exercise and how it heals itself come from curiosity, research and experimentation. During his many years of experience in the fitness field, he's been inspired to help people avoid injuring themselves thanks to all the time he's spent recovering from injuries as a wrestler and a dancer.

Jason is the creator of JAG Fitness and teaches Nia as part of his holistic fitness program called JAGfit. He is a Black Belt Nia teacher as well as personal trainer, and Yoga Tune Up teacher. He also teaches Energy Flow Conditioning and Deep Stretching classes.

Have fun while I away! Classes at Community Fitness are canceled on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 so I will see you all on Saturday, July 7, 2012!

With warmth,Jennifer

Dance in the brilliance of your star

Every once in awhile I come across a blog post that I feel compelled to share in a class. Last night I discovered the following poem titled “Celebrating Your Essence” on the Radiant Soul Space blog. It instantly resonated with me. I knew I had to share it as our class focus today. Let’s celebrate our essence by dancing in the brilliance of our star!

Celebrating Your Essence
By Otiti Jasmine

Claiming your path.
Because it’s calling, enticing, scintillating.
Delighting in its pull.
Because it’s glowing, burning, lighting you up inside.
Finding your voice.
Because your truth is welling, urging, bursting to be let loose.
Living your passion.
Because anything else is settling for second-best.
Stop waiting.
Stop settling.
Step up, step out, and step into your light.
Bask in it. Shine with it. Dance in the brilliance of your star.
