A Dance of Birth and Reclaiming

For our last evening we put on quite the performance for Kalani Oceanside Retreat guests and staff - belly dancing and a mini-Nia jam with my Nia colleagues Sandra Caldwell (Tacoma) and Maribeth Snell (Alaska) and we all shared a belly dance performance called Circle Beledi - a dance of birth and reclaiming. These are the beautiful women I've come to know and love over the past 5 days. Tomorrow is our last day together and we'll make the most fun of it.

Tide Pools, Dancing in Nature and Howling at the Moon

Day 4 - Today we danced in and with nature, then we danced Nia twice indoors - once in honor of Life as Art, the four elements and four realms and then for Natural Time and the cycle of nature (full moon tonight). We even howled at the moon. Nia and belly dancing are a beautiful marriage of movement forms/healing modalities - they are true soul sisters. We took a break in the middle of the day to go to the tide pools where a few dancers went snorkeling. Here is a photo of the tide pool area.

January 2012 Nia with Jennifer Newsletter

“What does the garden of your life look like now? What seedlings and flowerings have been neglected and now need some attention? Which need a bit of water? Light? Fresh air? A singing to? What is new that you are growing for this year? What seeds have you planted that you now are seeing sprout? Which do you need to let sit and stop digging up to see what’s happening? What may need to die to allow room for something new to grow?”
- Steph Cowling

The quote above is from a blog entry titled “Growing Your Garden” from Cosmic Cowgirls Magazine.  I know. The title is awesome and so are the blog entries.

This particular entry arrived just as I was contemplating what I seeds I desire to plant, nurture and grow this year in the garden of my Nia practice. The following are a few things I want to manifest:
  • Greater integrity in my practice and teaching of Nia. I want to master the 52+ moves with both precision and playfulness. I believe this will help me become a better teacher.
  • A deeper embodiment of the Nia principles which includes taking the time to learn and master the continuing education materials that include educational modules I can share with you on topics such as the base, core, upper extremities, x-ray anatomy, connective tissue, awareness, sight, sound, touch, etc. The learning is endless.
  • Bringing the healing arts aspects of Nia to the forefront of my practice and sharing it with you. I want to convey the power of Nia to heal and create significant shifts in how we live in our bodies, minds, hearts and spirits.
  • I desire greater collaboration with my Nia colleagues. Each of us is talented and together we are mighty! When our talents and passions merge everyone benefits. I feel incredibly lucky to be joining the Nia team (Susan Tate, Jena Hennessey and Gretchen Musgrove) at the Civetta Dance Space in Greenwood this year! I will also be partnering with my amazing colleagues Mollia Jensen, Randee Fox, and Jill Pagano on a few events. These are just a few collaborations coming up this year.
  • To continue with the theme of my birthday this past year, I intend to continue to explore the alchemy of my Voice as a teacher, educator and student.
  • In my personal life, I desire greater space in my life to explore my creativity and spend quality playful time with my loving husband.
I’d love to hear from you what you plan on growing in your Nia garden this year. Please share.

The seeds I planted have produced some significant changes in my schedule. Take a look:

Nia 5 Stages of Self-Healing Five-Week Series:
Sundays February 19 – March 18, 2012
5pm - 6pm
Cost: $50 for the series or $13 drop-in
Description: Nia 5 Stages is a powerful integrative practice based on the five stages of human development: embryonic, creeping, crawling, standing and walking. This practice is dedicated to self-healing and to using these five movements as stimulation to feel better in your body. The object of practicing these five simple movements is to prepare the body to become more functional, energetic, and comfortable while doing any movement such as: dancing, walking, running, yoga, martial arts, etc. This practice allows you to sense the natural ability your body has to realign itself and self-heal through movement. By the end of this five-week series you will have an in-depth introduction to each of the movements so that you can sustain a home practice.

"Feel more balance, power, coordination and grace in your whole body."

About the series
This six-week series is for both new and experienced Nia students. The focus of this foundational Nia series is on Principle 6 of the Nia white belt: The Base of the Body.
The base of the body is your foundation, where all movement begins. It includes your two feet, two ankles, two sets of shinbones, two knees, two thighbones and two hip joints.

What you will learn
In this series, you will learn all 27 base moves we use in Nia: 8 foot techniques, 9 steps, 6 stances and 4 kicks. There are a total of 52 official Nia moves so after this series you will only need to learn 25 more!

In each 60-minute session we will break down each movement in three phases: learn the move, move the move and energize the move. At the end of the series, expect to have a mastery of the 27 base moves that will deepen your experience of Nia. Each session will include useful educational handouts and practice assignments you can easily do at home.

Overview of each Session:
Session 1 on October 2:
The Feet, the Joy of Movement, and Principle 6 - Base of the Body. Introducing the 6 Stances used in a classic Nia class.

Session 2 on October 9:
A review of the 6 Stances and introducing the 8 foot techniques. Introduction of Principle 7 - Three Planes of Movement and Three Intensity Levels.

Session 3 on October 16:
A review of the 6 Stances, 8 foot techniques and Introducing the 9 steps. Introduction of Principle 5 – Awareness: Paying Attention to Body Sensations.

Session 4 on October 23:
A review of foot techniques, steps, and stances. Introducing the 4 Kicks. Introduction of Principle 10 - X-ray Anatomy.

Session 5 on October 30:
Review of all 27 base moves. Energizing the moves. Introduction of Principle 2 – Natural Time and The Movement Forms.

Session 6 on November 6:
Putting it all together, Dancing Through Life and Graduation! Let’s Dance!

If you come to all six sessions you will receive a graduation present. It’s a secret gift bag.

New to Nia?
Nia is a dynamic fitness and lifestyle practice combining movement and philosophies from the Martial Arts, Dance Arts, and Healing Arts to bring the body, mind, emotions and spirit to wellness. Through blending both choreography and freeform movement into 60-minute aerobic fitness odysseys, Nia emphasizes not only physical conditioning, but also creativity, community, self-discovery, and individual expression. This six-week series is a great introduction to Nia!

I hope that you will join me. Please contact me at jennifer@everybodyloveyourbody.com with any questions.
